‘Working hard to bring La Liga clubs to India’

La Liga India Managing Director Jose Antonio Cachaza said the country’s wing of the Spanish top-flight competition is “working hard” to bring clubs to the land in the near feature.

In 2018, a few months ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) season, the then top division outfit Girona had flown to Kochi to compete against Kerala Blasters FC and Melbourne City FC in the La Liga World. “We want more clubs to come and play here. We are having a few strategies and are looking to put everything into place,” Cachaza told DT Next.

Premier League holder Manchester City, which also clinched three other titles during the 2018-19 season, is celebrating its success with a Trophy Tour in India right now. Asked if one can expect Spanish powerhouses to do such activity in the coming years, Cachaza explained La Liga has its own way of interacting with the supporters.

“It’s good that a European club (City) has brought its trophies here. As far as our league is concerned, we arrange official screenings of the El Clasico in different cities. Some of our ambassadors have visited India to engage with the fans and media.”

Levante’s International Business Officer Luca Donati recently revealed the club has “special plans” for the Indian market. Cachaza said La Liga India is extending its complete support towards the project. “Levante is planning to have an academy in India. We are, of course, giving it all the help it requires.”

Tight competition

While usual suspects Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 25 points) are at the top of the La Liga table, only two points separate the first five teams. None of the other top-5 European leagues are witnessing such intense competition and Cachaza is delighted with how the season is shaping up.

“We are having one of the most exciting seasons. I am not only talking about Spain but also entire Europe. Yes, Barcelona and Real are at the top. But a bunch of clubs, which are just a few points behind, are chasing them. When the quality increases, the excitement level goes up a notch,” concluded Cachaza.
