Saina, Sindhu advance in Indonesia Super Series

India’s PV Sindhu kicked off her campaign at the Indonesia Super Series Premier event with a straight-games victory over Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in the women’s singles event here on Tuesday.

The fourth-seed produced a rich vein of form to register a 21-12, 21-19 win over Chochuwong in a one-sided opening round contest that lasted just 33 minutes. Sindhu will now lock horns with Beiwen Zhang of United States in the second round. 

Earlier, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal came out with a splendid performance as she bounced back from a game down to register a 17-21, 2118, 21-12 win over Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon. 

The 27-year-old Indian got off to a good start in the first game, taking a 10-4 lead before Intanon came back strongly and won the game 21-17. However, in the second game, Saina did not let the advantage go off her hands and levelled the match by winning the second game 21-18. 

Saina dominated the third game completely and won the game 21-12. Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles event, the Indian pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa knocked out of the tournament after suffering a straight games defeat at the hand of Indonesian duo of Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini.
