KOLKATA: An own goal by Sumeet Passi doomed East Bengal’s fate as ATK Mohun Bagan returned to winning ways by the barest of margins in the marquee ‘Kolkata Derby’ at the Durand Cup here on Sunday.

Playing in front of a crowd of about 70,000, Mohun Bagan, which had split the points in a 1-1 draw against Mumbai City FC, went ahead in freak manner in first half stoppage time. After Liston Colaco’s low corner-kick, Eliandro made a hash of a clearance and the ball deflected into the net off an onrushing Passi, who was literally blindsided and could not move his body out of the line. Mohun Bagan now has four points from three matches and will face Indian Navy in its concluding Group B fixture on September 5. Meanwhile, East Bengal has a solitary point from two games.

RESULT: East Bengal 0 lost to ATK Mohun Bagan 1 (S Passi 45(OG))
