After landing his first job in India in December 2019, Scotsman Coyle miraculously led Chennaiyin – which was last but one on the table when he took over – to the ISL final. With his CFC contract expiring at the end of Season 6, a number of clubs were behind him and eventually, Jamshedpur won his prized signature.
“I am delighted to come back to India. I am excited to put a successful team on the pitch. It is going to be a huge challenge. JFC has never qualified for the play-offs, but we have to stand together. I want to bring success to this wonderful club,” said Coyle during a virtual press conference organised on the Webex application.
In its first three years of existence, Jamshedpur failed to make the final-four in ISL, despite a change at the top each year. If it is to break the hoodoo in the upcoming season, Coyle would have to assemble a well-balanced squad, with some valuable additions.
The 54-year-old admitted that JFC is looking for options to upgrade its unit. “The most important factor at the end of the day is to score goals. We are working hard to secure a good goal scorer. I am also thrilled to work with the Indian players. We will have to put the pieces together and play an exciting brand of football,” he added.
When Coyle replaced John Gregory at Chennaiyin, his first assignment was an away trip to Jamshedpur on December 9, 2019. The manager revealed that he was impressed right away with the training facilities at the JRD Tata Sports Complex – JFC’s home – when he arrived there as a part of the away side.
“I was surprised by not only the stadium but also the playing field. It was as good as I have seen anywhere (in the world). So, the club struck a chord with me,” he stated. An Owen-fresh Jamshedpur may not be able to dazzle its fans at The Furnace – nickname of the sports complex – due to the coronavirus situation, but Coyle’s burning desire could just be what the club craved for.
