Just four Namibian athletes have thus far qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the Namibian Olympic Committee said on Wednesday.

More Namibians can however still qualify before the Games begin on July 24.

The four qualifiers are veteran marathon runner Helalia Johannes, rower Maike Diekmann and cyclists Dan Craven and Vera Adrian, reports Xinhua news agency.

Namibian Olympic Committee secretary general Joan Smit said Namibia will send more athletes to qualifying tournaments in boxing, swimming, karate and other sports in May.

She added that the aim is for Namibia to compete and win, and not only participate.

"Namibia has waited for a while to win an Olympic medal," she said.
