CHENNAI: Chennaiyin FC bowed out of the Durand Cup following a 3-5 quarter-final defeat to Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday.

The match needed extra time to decide the winning team as the sides were locked at two goals each at the end of the regulation 90 minutes.

For Mumbai City, Greg Stewart netted a hat-trick while Lallianzuala Chhangte knocked his former team out with a brace.

While CFC came back twice during normal time to force extra time, it could not handle MCFC in the deciding 30 minutes.

The Thomas Brdaric-coached Chennaiyin will next be in action in the Indian Super League when it faces ATK Mohun Bagan in its opener in Kolkata on October 10.
