CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has petitioned the Chief Electoral Officer and the State government, alleging violations of the Model Code of Conduct and seeking action on an AI-generated video invoking religious sentiments as well as the posting of a senior police officer in Madurai ahead of the Assembly elections.
In a complaint dated April 3, CPM State secretary P. Shanmugam said a video titled “Kandan Murugan Vote”, circulating on social media, was created using artificial intelligence and depicted a devotee praying to Lord Murugan, with a voice resembling the deity urging voters to support the lotus symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party contended that the content amounted to soliciting votes on religious grounds, in violation of Election Commission guidelines that prohibit appeals based on religion, caste or community.
The CPM termed the dissemination of such content illegal and against the Model Code of Conduct, and urged authorities to identify those responsible, initiate legal action, and ensure the immediate removal of the video from social media platforms. It also called for appropriate action against the BJP leadership, alleging that the content explicitly promoted its election symbol.
In a separate representation, the party objected to the transfer and appointment of IPS officer Abhishek Dixit as Madurai City Police Commissioner in the run-up to the April 23 Assembly elections. It said the officer had previously faced corruption allegations and departmental action during his tenure in Krishnagiri and in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, including cases related to disproportionate assets and irregularities in transfers and postings.
Citing these allegations, CPM said the appointment of such an officer to a key election-related post could undermine free and fair polling and erode public confidence. It urged the authorities to revoke the transfer order and continue J. Loganathan, the incumbent Commissioner, citing his administrative experience and record.
The party emphasised that ensuring impartial administration during elections was critical to maintaining transparency and public trust in the electoral process.
