However, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for traffic, a traffic police official told UNI.
Traffic on the 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in South Kashmir to Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was not allowed due to slippery road conditions following snowfall yesterday, particularly at Peer-ki-Gali.
Senior civil and traffic police officials are reviewing the road condition, he said, adding that traffic will be allowed only after receiving green signal to allow traffic.
He said traffic on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, was also suspended on Thursday following slippery road condition due to snowfall yesterday.
"We are allowing one way traffic from Ladakh to Kashmir from very early in the morning and later from here to Leh in the afternoon everyday to avoid any accident or traffic jam on Zojila," he said. However, today traffic was so far not allowed on the highway because of slippery road condition due to below freezing temperature.
He said traffic on Srinagar-Leh and Mughal road will be allowed only after improvement in the weather and keeping in view the security of travellers. However, he said, people are requested to contact traffic police control room in their respective areas before starting journey on these roads.
Meanwhile, traffic official said that traffic on the highway, linking Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was plying despite rain. However, heavy vehicles will continue to ply from one side only while light vehicles will operate from both sides.
Today heavy vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar, he said, adding that no heavy vehicle will be allowed from here.
