CHENNAI: In a major relief for passengers, Indian Railways has introduced a new facility allowing travellers to change their boarding point up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of their train.

The facility, announced by Southern Railway, will come into effect from April 1, 2026, offering greater flexibility and convenience to passengers.

Earlier, passengers were required to submit requests for a boarding point change at least 24 hours in advance, and the update would be reflected in the first reservation chart prepared four hours before departure. With the revised rule, passengers can now make the change up to 30 minutes before departure, and the update will be reflected in the second chart.

Passengers can avail the facility either online through IRCTC or at PRS counters by producing a valid ticket and ID proof.

The facility is applicable only for confirmed and RAC tickets, while waitlisted tickets are not eligible. The boarding point can be changed only once, and the request must be made before the preparation of the second chart.

The move is expected to benefit passengers facing last-minute changes in travel plans, ensuring a smoother and more flexible journey experience.
