CHENNAI: Heavy overnight rains lashed Karnataka's capital Bengaluru, with several roads severely waterlogged, prompting authorities to send rafts to evacuate people. The most affected areas include Bellandur, Sarjapura Road, Whitefield, Outer Ring Road, and BEML Layout.
Waterlogging led to traffic jams and disruptions in the lives of normal people. Several netizens also shared visuals from the capitals after rains flooded their residential areas. This is the second time in a week that the Karnataka state capital is witnessing such severe waterlogging.
“Situation is terrifying at Ecospace near Bellandur. Vehicles are quite literally sinking. Rains show no sign of relenting”, a Twitter user said, sharing a video.
Visuals from Sunday night showed streets near Ecospace submerged in rainwater. Several housing societies were also inundated with residents seeking Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s intervention.
Visuals from Marathahalli-Silk Board junction showed a security guard rescuing a man from drowning in a waterlogged road, reported ANI.
A yellow alert has been issued in 12 districts of Karnataka on Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department said.
Light to moderate thundershowers is predicted in Bengaluru's urban and rural districts till September 8.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai commented on waterlogging in the city and told to ANI, "We'll call IT companies and speak with them related to issues they're facing (due to waterlogging). We'll also discuss the compensation & other related damages caused due to rain".
Meanwhile, the city’s civic body BBMP has also issued helpline numbers. The toll-free number 1533 will also act as the rain helpline. The BBMP also has a 24×7 helpline (2266 0000) and WhatsApp helpline (94806 85700), along with zonal helpline numbers.
