College student from Thiruvottiyur taking selfie atop goods train electrocuted

CHENNAI: A 20-year-old college student who climbed atop a goods train allegedly to take a selfie with his friends got electrocuted after his hand came in contact with a high-tension wire while in the act on Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Kavin Sidharth, a third-year BBA student at a city college.

He lived with his family at Vivekanada Avenue in Thiruvottiyur.

On Monday evening, Kavin Sidharth went out with his friends to celebrate the birthday party of one of them. The group had first visited a swimming pool in Tondiarpet and later in the evening they visited the railway yard near VOC Nagar in Tondiarpet.

While at the railway yard, Kavin Sidharth climbed the goods train at the yard. Police said that he had lifted his hand to take a selfie when his hand came in contact with a high tension wire passing above.

Kavin suffered an electric shock and was thrown to the ground. His friends who heard his cries called for rescue and Kavin was moved to a hospital nearby where he was declared as brought dead.

Government Railway Police (Korukkupet) had registered a case and moved the youth's body to government hospital for post mortem. Further investigations are on.
