Writer lodges complaint against online harassment

City police’s cybercrime wing registered a case against a few social media users under Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and IT Act based on a complaint from writer Sundaravalli, deputy secretary of Chennai-based Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association (TNPWAA).

Sundaravalli said that the abusers went to extend of posting a fake clip, as if it is from a TV news, alleging that she was arrested for flesh trade. She has named a set of persons who have allegedly been harassing her through Facebook and also in WhatsApp groups. The FIR has named one Abimanyu and a few other Facebook, WhatsApp users as the accused. The case was registered under five sections, including 354 D (stalking) 469 (forgery to harm reputation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC. Last year, the city police had registered a case against the writer for her remarks during a public function saying her speech was ‘promoting enmity between groups’.
