CHENNAI: A 28-year-old woman died on Thursday evening following a physical altercation with her husband at their home in Ashok Nagar. The police have registered a case of murder against the husband, who is currently under interrogation.

The deceased has been identified as Vithya Bharathi, a homemaker. The accused is her husband, Praveen Kumar (31), a generator mechanic.

According to the complaint filed by Vithya's father, Balamurali (50), the couple had entered into a love marriage in 2015 against their family's wishes. They have two children—an 8-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter.

The complaint alleges that Praveen Kumar had a history of alcoholism, which frequently led to domestic disputes. On Thursday around 2:30 pm, an inebriated Praveen Kumar engaged in a heated argument with Vithya, which escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, Vithya suddenly collapsed, losing consciousness.

Frightened by the turn of events, Praveen Kumar reportedly fled the scene. His aunts, Amutha and Tilakam, who live nearby, rushed Vithya to the Pallava Medical Hospital in an auto-rickshaw. From there, she was referred to the KK Nagar Government Hospital. Doctors at KK Nagar pronounced her dead on arrival and informed the police.

Her body has been shifted to the KK Nagar ESI Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

Police officials have detained Praveen Kumar for questioning.
