CHENNAI: A 28-year-old woman councillor of Tirunindravur municipality was hacked to death on Thursday night near Tirunindravur subway by her husband, who suspected her fidelity.

Police investigations revealed that the man suspected her of infidelity and confronted her on Thursday night, which escalated into murder.

The deceased, S Gomathi, had contested as an Independent and won from ward 26 in Tirunindravur municipality, according to official records.

Police said her husband, A Stephen Raj (32), is a VCK functionary. The couple got married 10 years ago and lived on Mettu Street, Periya Colony, Tirunindravur, with their four sons.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had frequent quarrels in the last few months, as Stephen Raj suspected Gomathi of infidelity. Around 11 pm on Thursday, Stephen Raj and Gomathi had an argument over this near the Tirunindravur subway.

"He had carried a knife with the intention to attack his wife. After the argument escalated, the man took out the knife and repeatedly attacked his wife," a police officer said.

Stephen Raj left Gomathi to bleed to death and surrendered before the police after the murder. A team from Tirunindravur police station rushed to the scene and secured Gomathi's body and sent it to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.

After investigations, Tirunindravur police also arrested Stephen Raj's younger brother, A Ajith (25), and his friend, S Johnson alias Anthony Raj (25), for aiding the accused. All three persons were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
