Woman arrested for cheating resident of Rs 42 lakh in college seat scam

CHENNAI: A 45-year-old woman was arrested in connection with a cheating case wherein a city resident was cheated of Rs 42 lakh after a promised seat at a veterinary college for his son.

The complainant, a resident of Ashok Nagar, runs a bakery. In 2023, he was approached by a trio who claimed to be influential and promised admission at a veterinary college for his son.

The trio took Rs 42 lakh from the complainant in 3 installments, but did not get admission for his son as promised. When he asked for the money back, the trio kept on dodging him and repaid only Rs 4.4 lakh, and allegedly threatened him after which he filed a complaint with the KK Nagar police.

After investigations, police arrested one of the accused, Lakshmi Priya (45) of Arcot, Ranipet district, and recovered Rs 1 lakh from her. She was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. Search is on for her associates.
