Traffic hit on NH as melon lorry topples, locals make merry

Following the accident, passersby and local residents rushed to the scene and began collecting the watermelons, leading to a chaotic situation and severe traffic congestion.

CHENNAI: Traffic was affected on the National Highway near Maduranthagam after a lorry loaded with watermelons toppled after it was hit by another truck on Thursday.

The lorry was heading towards Koyembedu from Tindivanam when near Maduranthagam on the Tiruchy-Chennai NH, one of the tyres got flat. The driver parked the vehicle beside the road and took the tyre to the puncture shop.

At that time, another lorry, bound for Chennai from Tiruchy, came speeding and smashed against it. With the vehicle flipping and watermelons getting scattered on the road, the locals had a field day collecting them.

Maduranthagam police brought things under control and registered a case. Following the incident, the traffic was affected on the National Highway for more than half an hour.
