CHENNAI: Two women died and another sustained injuries while trying to cross a railway track near Tiruvottiyur.

Korukkupet Railway Police identified the deceased as Sakthi (21) and Rajeshwari (55). Officials said Sakthi and her husband Ravichandran (25) had invited their relatives from Bengaluru to join the celebration of their son’s first birthday. When their relatives, Rajeshwari and Jayammal (70), reached Chennai central railway station, had gone to receive them.

From the station, they took an EMU to reach Tiruvottiyur. Officials said they were crossing the railway track when the accident happened. Ravichandran and Sakthi had crossed the tracks while Rajeswari and Jayammal were near the tracks. Sakthi noticed the fast-approaching Chennai–Delhi train and tried to save the two women by pushing them off the track. But in the effort, the train hit her and Rajeshwari, while Jayammal sustained injuries.

After inquiry, the Korukkupet police recovered both bodies and sent them to Government Stanley Hospital for postmortem.
