CHENNAI: The Chennai city police suspended two traffic constables and transferred a head constable to the waiting list following a public altercation among personnel at Marina beach. The incident, captured on video, sparked widespread criticism.

The incident happened two days ago when head constable Shanmugasundaram of the Triplicane traffic wing slapped a Rs 2,000 fine on a youth as his vehicle did not have insurance. Soon, Raghavan, an off-duty constable in plainclothes, and his colleague Leo confronted him for issuing fine without an inspector or SI present.

The argument escalated, and Shanmugasundaram assaulted Raghavan. The clip of the incident went viral, and there were allegations that fines collected by traffic personnel in the Marina zone were being improperly shared among certain officers, including Inspectors and Reserve Inspectors.

After reviewing the video, the Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) suspended the two constables and transferred Shanmugasundaram to the vacancy reserve.
