“The disinfection tunnel in Tiruvanmiyur is the first such tunnel installed by the Chennai Corporation. We are planning one more tunnel in the market premises, as the crowd is higher especially on weekends,” Alby John,

Regional Deputy Commissioner (South) of Chennai Corporation said. He added that the civic body was searching for possibilities of creating more such facilities in other parts of the city. The tunnel in Tiruvanmiyur was set up entirely using the civic body’s fund.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority  (CMDA) had already installed disinfection tunnels at 10 spots inside Koyambedu wholesale market complex for customers and traders.

Meanwhile, the civic body had covered 9,95,953 households of the total 19,84,408 households in the city during the door-to-door drive as on April 7. A total of 695 persons were identified with symptoms and 291 cases have been cured, officials said. The cases of the remaining 404 persons would be followed-up. The civic body has employed more than 10,500 personnel to conduct the drive.
