CHENNAI: The Regional Deputy Commissioner (north) Katta Ravi Theja on Monday announced that the Victory Matric Higher Secondary school will be temporarily closed until further notice.

On October 25, 35 students were hospitalised due to a hazardous gas leak at the school premises. Almost after 10 days, the school was opened on Monday, and four students fainted due to another gas leak. They were immediately admitted at a nearby private hospital.

“This is the second incident in the school within 10 days. It will be temporarily closed and we’ve formed a committee to look into the issue. Based on the reports submitted by the team, the decision to reopen the school will be taken,” Theja told DT Next.

Councillor K Karthik (Ward 7) said that unhygienic toilets in the school could have been the reason for the gas leak. “Students were suffering from urinary infection due to unclean toilets. The State government must inspect the school and take appropriate action against the management immediately.”
