Techie duo held for stealing Rs 40 lakh from widow’s house

Police said that the duo – Prabakaran (23) of Tirunindravur and Issac Daniel (24) of Uthukottai – knew the victim and often visited her apartment in Reddykuppam. She has been staying alone after her husband died a few years ago, and her daughter is studying abroad.

On November 6, the woman realised that Rs 40 lakh, which she had received after selling a land, was missing from the cupboard after the duo paid a visited. Following a complaint she lodged Kanathur police station, a team of personnel searched the room in Karapakkam where the accused had been staying while working at a nearby IT firm. They retrieved Rs 27 lakh kept in a bag.

A hunt was launched for the suspects, and the police came to know that they were staying in Puducherry from where they were secured. Investigation revealed that they had initially stole Rs 3 lakh from the house. As the victim did not realise that money was missing, they decided to escape with the entire Rs 40 lakh.

The duo splurged the stolen money on two expensive mobile phones and travelled to Kodaikanal, said the police. Both were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.
