Tax collector takes Rs 9,000 bribe, gets caught

The complainant, a resident of Sriji Apartments in Manapakkam, was trying to fix the house tax, for which he approached tax collector Ganesan of Valsaravakkam corporation office.

CHENNAI: A tax collector of Ward 151, Valsaravakkam in Chennai, was caught red-handed by sleuths from the Directorate Of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday while accepting a bribe of Rs 9,000 for assessment of house tax from an applicant. The complainant, a resident of Sriji Apartments in Manapakkam, was trying to fix the house tax, for which he approached tax collector Ganesan of Valsaravakkam corporation office. Ganesan told the complainant that the house tax will be around Rs 1 lakh from 2011 to current date. Ganesan later demanded Rs 9,000 as bribe to process the house tax. The complainant refused to pay and filed a complaint with the DVAC. On Wednesday, sleuths caught Ganesan accepting the bribe. He was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
