District details

Salem district was once part of the then Salem Zilla Board, which had 18 constituencies in the 1952 and 1957 elections. The largest district was bifurcated to create Dharmapuri district in 1965. 

The Namakkal district was carved out in 1996 and the remaining Salem district was split into two again by creating Krishnagiri district in 2002. The district is known for Salem Steel Plant, Stanley Reservoir (Mattur Dam) and Yercaud. With more than 100 spinning mills in the district, Salem is also known as textile hub. The district also has numerous handloom units and sago factories. 

During the 2011 Assembly election, Salem North and Salem South witnessed the maximum number of contestants (16) whereas the minimum number of candidates (6) contested in Yercaud (ST) constituency. 

86. Edappadi 

Total No of voters: 2,17,074 

Votes polled: 1,85,494

Polling percentage: 85.48% 

Winner: Palaniswami K (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Karthe M (PMK) 

Margin: 34,738 votes

Edappadi is the third largest town in the district after Attur and Mettur. The sitting MLA of the constituency, Edappadi K Palaniswami of AIADMK, is also the Minister for Highways, Minor Ports and Forests since 2011. It’s a stronghold of both PMK and AIADMK. I Ganesan (ADK and PMK) was a four-time MLA of the constituency in 1977, 1980, 1996 and 2001. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), PMK (2006), PMK (2001), PMK (1996), ADK (1991) and ADK (1989).

87. Sankari 

Total No of voters: 2,14,637 

Votes polled: 1,84,859 

Polling percentage: 86.21% 

Winner: Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy P (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Veerapandi S Arumugam (DMK)

Margin: 35,079 votes

It was a reserved constituency till 2006; after delimitation in 2008, it was included in the general category. P Dhanapal of ADMK is a four-time MLA of this constituency in 1977, 1980, 1984 and 2001. This constituency too reflects overall winner of the state to form the government since 1984. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).

88. Salem (West)

Total No of voters: 2,12,454

Votes polled: 1,69,785

Polling percentage: 79.92% 

Winner: Venkatachalam G (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Rajendran R (DMK) 

Margin: 27,661 votes

Formed after the delimitation process in 2008, Salem West was previously part of Salem I and II constituencies. Parts of Omalur taluk and ward numbers from 1 to 5 and 17 to 25 of the corporation are now included in Salem West constituency. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

89. Salem (North) 

Total No of voters: 2,19,327 

Votes polled: 1,63,356

Polling percentage: 74.53%

Winner: Alagapuram R Mohanraj (DMDK)

Runner-up: Jayaprakash G (INC) 

Margin: 29,365 votes

Formed after the delimitation process in 2008, Salem North too was previously being a part of Salem I and II constituencies. Parts of Salem taluk and corporation wards from 6 to 16 and 26 to 36, and Kannankurichi (Town Panchayat) are the parts of the Salem North constituency. Winning party: DMDK (2011).

90. Salem (South)

Total No of voters: 2,19,949

Votes polled: 1,73,464

Polling percentage: 78.89% 

Winner: Selvaraju MK (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Sivalingam SR (DMK) 

Margin: 60,215 votes

Formed after the delimitation process in 2008, Salem South was previously a part of Salem I and II constituencies. Parts of Salem taluk and ward numbers from 37 to 60 are now parts of Salem South constituency. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

91. Veerapandi 

Total No of voters: 2,01,660

Votes polled: 1,79,729

Polling percentage: 89.16% 

Winner: Selvam SK (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Rajendran A (DMK) 

Margin: 26,498 votes

The winning party here is forming the government in state from 1984 election. DMK leader Veerapandi. S Arumugam was a four-time MLA from here and he was a consecutive winner in 1962, 1967 and 1971. Veerapandi recorded the highest voter turnout (89.16%) in 2011. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).
