CHENNAI: Sun TV Network has approached the Madras High Court seeking to restrain Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from using its songs from the movies 'Jailer', 'Jailer 2' and 'Coolie' for the team's promotional activities.
Sun TV Network Limited filed a copyright petition, stating that on March 1, 2026, the CSK team had unveiled its new jersey through a promotional video shared on CSK's official social media pages on Instagram, X, YouTube and Facebook.
It has been submitted that the video prominently used audio tracks and dialogues from Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie and further incorporated copyrighted audio elements at multiple junctures.
Sun TV Networks submitted that the video was intended to launch and market the new jersey of the team, featuring its logo and the brand names of its principal sponsors. It has been submitted that through the exploitation of copyrighted works, the team has tried to aid the sale of its match jersey, which is priced at Rs 2,399, along with other merchandise in South India and more predominantly in Chennai.
Sun also called upon the team to disclose their revenue generated through the promotional activities and deposit the same before the court to the credit of the suit.
When the matter came up before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on Friday, Senior Counsel PS Raman, appearing for the cricket team, informed the court that the videos were pulled back immediately on receipt of intimation by Sun.
He also informed the court that the team will not be using any of the songs belonging to the network unless a license is obtained. The court recorded the undertaking and directed the team to file an undertaking to that effect. The case has now been adjourned to March 16.
