CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin opened 2,488 ring main units (RMU) in 28 Assembly constituencies in the city and neighbouring districts to provide an uninterrupted power supply.

An official release said that the RMUs were set up in the constituencies, including Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Avadi, Chepauk, Egmore, RK Nagar, Royapuram and Thousand Lights at the cost of Rs 360.63 crore.

Tangedco has proposed to replace existing conventional distribution transformer structures are to be replaced into RMU in the city and its suburban area. In the first phase, the utility proposed erecting 5,692 RMU at Rs 787 crore. Already, it has completed the installation of 216 RMU at Rs 31.31 crore.

RMU occupies very less space compared to conventional structures, no live parts are exposed and it facilitates easy identification of faulty sections, hence rectification is made quicker. Each RMU has been connected to two feeder lines. If a fault happens at a feeder line, the power supply will be provided through another feeder line. All the RMUs are connected through the SCADA system at the state load despatch centres and it could be controlled from there.
