Soon, crossing stop line at traffic signal will attract fine

Motorists who disregard the stop line at traffic signals would soon have to pay a fine, with the Greater Chennai Traffic police deciding to not be lenient towards this violation anymore. The traffic police personnel have already started creating awareness about the stop line, though a final decision has not been taken on when to commence the zero-tolerance policy on the matter.

Though the rules are already in place against crossing the stop line when the signal is red, motorists tend to ignore it under the impression that it is not a major offence, said a senior traffic police officer. “They do not realise that going beyond the stop line [when the signal is red] leads to a lot of accidents and even result in fatalities. Ignoring the red signal when the road is empty is another other cause for accidents,” said the officer. So, a campaign has been initiated to create awareness about these seemingly minor violations and to increase the visibility of police personnel. The officer added that the offenders stopping beyond the stop line would soon be fined though the date of initiation has not been finalised yet.

The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at some of the important junctions in the city are already generating automatic challans for crossing the stop line when the red signal is on.
