The assault happened on February 26 when Sekar’s mother N Sokkammal (85) passed away at her daughter Santhalakshmi alias Salma’s house on Dr Besant Road in Royapettah. The accused, Malarkodi, went to attend the funeral with her sons Azhaguraja, Balaji, and sister Mala.

An argument erupted between Malarkodi and Santhalakshmi and in the melee, Azhaguraja and Balaji attacked Santhalakshmi and her daughter with machetes. As they attacked them with the machete’s handle, they did not suffer bleeding injuries.

Though the police control room was informed, the accused fled from the scene. Based on Santhalakshmi’s complaint, the Ice House police registered a case and arrested Malarkodi under six sections, including attempted murder. She was remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.

A hunt has been launched for Azhaguraja and Balaji. It may be recalled that Azhaguraja was arrested in October last year for hurling country bombs at a gang that came to attack him and Malarkodi when they were returning home in an autorickshaw from Egmore court. Malarkodi, who has several cases pending against her, is an advocate as well as an AIADMK functionary, like her slain husband.
