Six Rameswaram fishermen return to Chennai after detention by Sri Lankan Navy

The Sri Lankan Coast Guard had surrounded the fishermen, seized their boats and arrested all of them for crossing the maritime border.

CHENNAI: Six Tamil Nadu fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard returned to Chennai on Wednesday after being released. The fishermen from Rameshwaram were arrested while fishing on January 12.

The Sri Lankan Coast Guard had surrounded the fishermen, seized their boats and arrested all of them for crossing the maritime border.

Following that Chief Minister Stalin had requested the Union government to take immediate action to bring back the fishermen.

Then with efforts from the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka, all the fishermen were released from the prison and handed over to the Indian officials.

The officers arranged the travel documents for them and the six fishermen reached Chennai on an Air India flight on Wednesday night.

The officials from the fisheries department welcomed the fishermen at the airport and arranged transport to Rameshwaram.
