The victim, V Anthony (44) of Pulianthope, was sitting under the Doveton flyover when three men on a two-wheeler without helmets snatched his phone and fled the spot.
Based on his complaint, Vepery police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for the suspects.
Meanwhile, Poonamallee police have arrested five persons, including juveniles, for snatching phones from pedestrians in the neighbourhood.
The accused were identified as Saravanan (29) of Mangadu and Ismail (22) of Korukkupet. The other three are juveniles. Six mobile phones and a two-wheeler were seized from them. The duo was remanded while the juveniles were sent to observation home.
