Scrap Hindi, issue ID cards in English, Tamil: LIC customers

More than 30 persons insured with national insurer Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) demonstrated in front of the insurance firm’s Chennai head office demanding that their identity cards have their names in English and Tamil and not in English and Hindi.

Those present stated that this was an agitation to call attention to a move which was against the interests of Tamilians. They demanded that ID cards having Hindi names be recalled by the corporation and that owners be issued ID cards with their names in Tamil as was followed till recently. In fact, a poster at the spot went a step further and demanded that LIC give them ID cards having their names only in Tamil.

However, the LIC was not forth coming. When the Internal Relations at the head office was contacted, the official who answered the phone only stated that a representation had been received in this connection and said such information could not be discussed over the phone. When asked how long the ID cards were issued with the name printed in English and Hindi, he said he did not know.

With Tamil Nadu always being against Hindi imposition, the back door method adopted by LIC is sure to raise Tamil’s hackles.
