Sans lights, Tambaram Sanatorium flyover becomes den for anti-socials

Lack of lighting on the Tambaram Sanatorium flyover for the past few months has been a great inconvenience for the commuters at the night. They said that the bridge is a den for anti-social elements, especially after nightfall.

The area where the flyover is located houses the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ). Even the Tambaram Court, Revenue Divisional Office (RDO) and Tambaram Taluk office are located to one side of the flyover and on the other side, the Chitlapakam police station, panchayat office and many residential neighbourhoods.

Commuters said that it has remained dark in the night for more than six months and no steps were taken by the officials to repair the lights even after many requests.

“The flyover is busy at all times with many vehicles plying on it. I wait for my office cab on this flyover every day. The lack of light makes me feel insecure while waiting here,” said Dinesh Kumar from Tambaram.

Sources said that there are confusions in the jurisdiction between the Tambaram Municipality and the Chitlapakam town panchayat on who would maintain the flyover.

While multiple attempts to reach the Tambaram municipality officials went unanswered, Chitlapakam Town panchayat Executive Officer R Ganesan said, “We are working on the issue and all the lights will get replaced soon.”
