Roof collapse kills woman watching TV

A 34-year-old woman died after the roof of her rented house collapsed on her in Saligramam on Tuesday. The deceased, J Sathya, worked as a housekeeping staff at a mall in Vadapalani and stayed with her mother Lakshmi (60).

The incident happened around 2.30 pm when they were watching TV at their house on the ground floor of the building at Mathiyazhagan Nagar. A concrete part of the roof came off and fell on Sathya's head.

She suffered grievous injuries and her mother rushed her to a private hospital but she was declared brought dead. Investigation revealed that the they had been staying in the house for about a year. While they had decided to vacate the house, they waited for the Adi Tamil month to get over to shift, said police.

Based on a complaint by Lakshmi, Virugambakkam police registered a case and booked owner K Jeyasankar. Police said it is a 30-year-old building with six houses, said to be in dilapidated condition.
