Following continuous rain, most of the lakes reached full capacity. In Guduvanchery, excess water entered the residential areas in Mahalakshmi Nagar, Udayasoorian Nagar and Amudham Colony. Residents were unable to come out of their houses and Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Maraimalai Nagar along with Guduvanchery police began rescue operations. Many senior citizens, children and pregnant women were rescued with the help of boats and taken to relief camps near the locality.

“We suffer whenever it rains. The government should take steps to prevent water from entering residential areas. We have taken up the issue with the officials but in vain,” opined a shopkeeper.

The areas in Mudichur and Varadharajapuram were also flooded. The residents said the water level was the same as during the 2015 floods.

Sources said of the 909 lakes in Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu, 358 lakes reached their full capacity, 294 lakes to 75 per cent capacity, 197 lakes to 50 per cent while 40 lakes have below 25 per cent water.
