Rain brings respite to city, wet spell to continue, says Met department

After the sweltering heat during the day, rains brought some respite to the city in the evening hours. Though not widespread, suburbs including Pallavaram, Tambaram, Velachery, Madambakkam and Porur received light to moderate rainfall.

Various parts of the city and a few places across the State are expected to receive similar rainfall in the next two days, said the forecast by Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, and private bloggers tracking the weather.


A little past noon, the stations at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 40.2 degree Celsius and 40 degree Celsius respectively. However, this dropped to 30.5 degree Celsius and 28.7 degree Celsius by evening. Following the rain, several flights were delayed up to half an hour at Chennai airport.


Elsewhere in the State, the highest rainfall was recorded at Dindigul (7 cm), while The Nilgiris, Theni and Coimbatore received 4 cm each.


On Sunday, rains are expected at Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ramanathapuram, The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, and Tiruvannamalai, and also Puducherry and Karaikal, said weathermen.


Weather blogger Pradeep John said that conditions were good for convective rains in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. Sea breeze is expected to bring the moisture and help to bring down the temperatures, he said.
