CHENNAI: Valuables worth Rs 1.30 crore that the Government Railway Police recovered from burglars were returned to their actual owners at a function presided over by Head of State police DGP C Sylendra Babu in city. The stolen properties include 193 sovereigns, 156 mobile phones and 6 laptops.

Speaking to the media after handing over the properties to the original owners, DGP Sylendra Babu said that said that the railway police personnel have also been taking action against ganja peddlers and seized more than 1,700 kg of ganja being smuggled from neighbouring states.

A number of peddlers have been arrested in this connection, including five who were detained under the Goondas act. As part of the crackdown against drug peddlers, several of them were arrested and their bank accounts and properties were frozen by the police, he said.

Apart from ganja, the railway police have also seized 14,155 kg of ration rice being smuggled out of the State on trains.

During the function, Sylendra Babu also gave away rewards to police personnel who performed well in nabbing the criminals and also recovering the stolen goods. Besides the police chief, ADGP V Vanitha, DIG Abishek Dixit and other senior officers were also present at the function.
