CHENNAI: The Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested two women – S Rekha (33) and Kanmani (36) – who targeted passengers in ladies’ compartments in suburban trains and snatched their gold chains. They were involved in at least 14 chain-snatching cases.

A special team was formed based on a complaint from Vasuki, a resident of Cuddalore, who had visited her daughter in Chennai.

She was waiting to board a train from Saidapet railway station to reach Tambaram and catch a Mofussil bus from there to Cuddalore on August 7 when the incident happened.

As Vasuki boarded the ladies’ compartment, a woman distracted her and another snatched the 17-gram gold chain from Vasuki and fled the scene. The GRP perused CCTV footage and zeroed in on the suspects and traced them to a neighbourhood in Hosur.

Police nabbed them on Monday when they arrived in the city, and recovered 11 grams of gold.
