SI suspended for harassing restaurant workers in Chennai

The restaurant owner filed a complaint with the office of DGP (Director General of Police) after which Avadi City police were directed to investigate and take action.

CHENNAI: A sub inspector with Ambattur police station in Avadi City Commissionerate was on Monday suspended for harassing workers at a restaurant in Ambattur to shut their premises, claiming that it was functioning well past midnight.

The sub inspector then called the restaurant owner over phone and asked him to inform his workers to shut the shop.

The restaurant owner filed a complaint with the office of DGP (Director General of Police) after which Avadi City police were directed to investigate and take action.

After investigation, it was found that Sub Inspector, Dasarathan attached to Ambattur police station had asked the restaurant to shut down after which he was placed under suspension.

Director General of Police, C Sylendra Babu has asked his personnel to not harass shopkeepers, who have opened their business at night, by asking them to shut down. The State government had passed a GO (government order) allowing commercial establishments to function 24 X 7.

“Do not interfere in the legal functioning of commercial establishments and restaurants at night. At the same time, take action if they are found to indulge in any illegal activity, ” the note from the office of state police chief stated.
