CHENNAI: A city police inspector in Royapuram has been transferred to the vacancy reserve list following allegations of assault of social activists during a protest at a marriage hall a few days ago.

TVK MLA Vijay Damu was also present at the wedding hall, seeking justice for the affected parties, the police said.

Inspector Chidambara Bharathi went to the wedding hall after hearing of a commotion. The groom had allegedly cheated a young woman after promising marriage, converted her to his religion, and then abandoned her and married another woman, the police said.

Learning of the wedding, the woman and several social activists went to the hall and protested against the groom. The inspector allegedly abused and assaulted some activists who supported the woman. A video of the inspector speaking inappropriately to the MLA at the venue went viral on social media. After a probe by the top brass, inspector Chidambara Bharathi was transferred to the vacancy reserve.
