An environment protection organisation moved the Madras High Court challenging the appointment of former chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan as an expert member of National Green Tribunal (NGT), noting that she lacked the prescribed experience in dealing with such matters

Poovulagin Nanbargal represented by its managing trustee G Sundarrajan submitted that Section 5 of the NGT Act clearly stipulates administrative experience of 15 years, including experience of five years in dealing with environmental matter either in the central or State governments or in a reputed institute.

However, the former chief secretary does not possess the required experience of five years, and thus her appointment is in contravention of the stipulation, the plea said, seeking a direction to quash the notification approving her appointment. The PIL cited a Supreme Court order allowing public spirited individuals to move High Court if anyone does not meet the requirement for appointment.

Vacation court to sit on Dec 30

As the High Court is closing for Christmas holidays from December 24 to January 3 at both principal seat in Chennai and circuit bench at Madurai, vacation judges are scheduled to sit on December 30.
