Plastic unit near Red Hills gutted in fire

A fire broke out at a plastic recycling unit in Red Hills in the wee hours of Saturday causing damage to the machineries. The unit at Chinna Kottur belongs to one Deepak of Patalam, said the police.

The unit had remained closed for over a month due to the lockdown. Around 4 am, neighbours spotted smoke billowing out from the premises and alerted the fire control room. Fire and Rescue personnel from Madhavaram, Red Hills, Avadi, Ambattur and Poonamallee rushed to the spot and doused the flames after five hours.

On information, Red Hills police reached the spot and conducted inquires. A case has been registered and further investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the accident.

A short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire, which spread rapidly to the plastic waste kept in the unit.
