Passenger suffers head injury as man pelts bottle at EMU; suspect arrested

CHENNAI: Ten days after three passengers were injured when an unidentified person pelted a glass bottle at a moving EMU train, the railway police on Wednesday apprehended a man suspected of throwing the bottle.

The incident happened around 9.30 am on January 5 when a glass bottle was thrown at a Tiruvallur- Moore Market Complex EMU when it was running between Vyasarapadi and Basin Bridge railway stations.

Following a complaint, the Government Railway Police (GRP) formed a special team along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

The team reviewed CCTV footage from the MMC station and identified a suspect, who was in an intoxicated state while boarding an EMU moving in the opposite direction. The accused was identified as Gabriel Duraisamy, a known offender involved in 26 cases.

The officials then launched a search for him.

After tracking his mobile phone location, the team nabbed the 47-year-old suspect from Erode, who is currently residing in Triplicane, on Wednesday morning. When questioned, he claimed that he threw the bottle onto the track which hit the train passing on the opposite track. He was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody till January 28.

Police sources said that one of the victims suffered a severe head injury while the other two sustained minor injuries.
