Passenger rush hits Chennai Airport as schools reopen, airfares skyrocket

All the flights that arrived from Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tiruchy, and Coimbatore were full, flooding the arrival section with thousands of passengers.

CHENNAI: Chennai: The footfall in the domestic terminal of Chennai airport increased as people returned from vacation following the start of the academic year.

With the new academic year, those who travelled to their native places in the southern districts returned on Monday. All the flights that arrived from Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tiruchy, and Coimbatore were full, flooding the arrival section with thousands of passengers.

Due to the last-minute rush, prices of flight tickets to Chennai from Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tiruchy and Coimbatore surged by three times, which didn’t seem to deter passengers from choosing air travel as it saves time in terms of escaping traffic chaos and convenience.

Here’s a look at today’s airfare surge:

• Normal fare: Rs. 4,542

• Today’s fare: Rs. 18,127

• Thoothukudi–Chennai

• Normal fare: Rs. 4,214

• Today’s fare: Rs. 17,401

• Tiruchy–Chennai

• Normal fare: Rs. 2,334

• Today’s fare: Rs. 9,164

• Coimbatore–Chennai

• Normal fare: Rs. 3,550

• Today’s fare: Rs. 6,475

Families are now paying higher airfares to return in time for the start of the new academic year.
