Overloaded auto on OMR hits median, passenger dies

An overloaded share-auto ran amok and hit the median on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) at Taramani on Friday night, leaving a 57-year-old man dead and four including the driver injured.

The deceased was identified as V Moorthy (57) of Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. The incident happened around 11 pm when driver Manikandan (29), of Tsunami Colony, Semmencherry, drove the auto with 11 passengers on board, mainly workers from a private catering services firm who had boarded the auto from a wedding hall in Kandanchavadi, said police.

When the auto reached the traffic signal at SRP Tools bus stop, Manikandan lost control of the vehicle, which skidded, ran amok and hit the median. While Moorthy died on the spot, Manikandan suffered injuries on his head.

The injured passengers were identified as Desikan (44), Shanmugam (34) and Murugesan (39), who were admitted to Royapettah Government Hospital for treatment. The Guindy Traffic Investigation police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
