NGT panel to look into fire at dump yard

The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench has taken suo motu cognisance on fire incident at Peerkankaranai Town Panchayat near Tambaram and constituted a committee to submit the steps taken by the panchayat for the implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The tribunal also issued notice to the authorities concerned.

The matter was taken up before Justice K Ramakrishnan and expert member Saibal Dasgupta, based on a media report which alleged that instead of scientifically disposing of the waste, unauthorised method of setting it afire is being employed allegedly by the contractor, with knowledge of panchayat officials, to bring down the huge legacy waste. Further, the fire was doused after serious efforts by the Fire personnel, it said.

The committee would submit the steps taken by the panchayat for the implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 in their local unit and the steps taken for collection and disposal of waste generated.
