“Emotional and mental health is important because it impacts your thoughts and behaviour. We live in a competitive world where people are struggling to survive. In the process, most of us don’t give importance to our mental health and lead a stressful life. Unable to face life, some decide to even end their lives,” says Angelin, founder of The Candles. 

To observe World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10), The Candles in association with Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Kilpauk, will be organising wall painting to create awareness among people and keep them away from suicidal tendencies. “Painting is one of the best therapeutic activities. Along with the volunteers from The Candles, the residents of IMH will paint IMH’s hospital ward,” she adds.

Suicide is not an answer or a solution to a person’s problems. When you reach the peak point, suicide seems to be the only way to escape for most people. “These days, relationships, be it between husband-wife, parents-children, and between siblings, have become namesake. There is no genuine love in any relations. Like how mental health is important for an adult, it is equally vital for a child too. Children are growing up in a stressful environment and it’s the parent’s responsibility to guide them in a proper way,” explains Angelin.
