NCB seizes 661 kg ganja meant for SL, arrests five

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized 661.5 kg of ganja from a container truck and arrested five persons, including two from Chennai, during an operation on Wednesday night. The narcotics consignment was meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka through sea route.

A press release from NCB zonal director, Chennai, Bruno A stated that a team from the Chennai zonal office intercepted a container truck bearing fake Tamil Nadu registration number near Ayakkaranpulam in Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam district.


During the check, the sleuths found 661.5 kg of ganja in 310 packets wrapped with brown adhesive tape inside the container.


Following the seizure, the narcotics cops arrested Ramanan (39), Thavamani (34), from Tiruvotriyur, Selvaraj (54), Iyyappan (35) and Paramanandam (43), from Nagapattinam.


During the enquiry, the arrested persons confessed that they sourced the narcotics from Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh, and managed to transport the same without being detected across Tamil Nadu before they were stopped by the NCB team on Wednesday night.


The suspects further told the NCB investigators that the contraband was further destined to be taken to the island nation by boat from Nagapattinam shore clandestinely.
