Monsoon preparedness: Mass cleaning of sewer lines commences again

According to a Metrowater statement, the works would be conducted in 2,014 streets between September 5 and September 15. As many as 11,051 manholes will be cleared.

CHENNAI: Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metrowater) will commence mass desilting of underground sewage lines across the city as a part of monsoon preparedness from Monday.

According to a Metrowater statement, the works would be conducted in 2,014 streets between September 5 and September 15. As many as 11,051 manholes will be cleared.

"During the drive, sewer pipes and manholes will be desilted. In the 2,014 streets, as many as 500 machines such as 282 desilting machines, 161 jet-rodding machines, 57 super suckers will be used, " the statement said.

Of the 2,014 streets shortlisted for mass cleaning, 234 srreets are in Teynampet zone and 210 streets are in Kodambakkam.

Meanwhile, the water manager requested the residents to intimate the Metrowater about the sewage leakages and clogs by contacting the respective area officers and depot offices.

A few weeks ago, the water manager conducted similar drive and cleared more than 2 lakh metres of sewer lines across the city.
