Sources said that a six-year-old girl was playing in a newly-opened park on Panneerselvam Park at Periyar Nagar in Vyasarpadi. A 30-year-old man who came to the park at that time tried to molest the girl after taking her to a remote corner of the park. A woman, who was standing on the terrace of her house located close to the park, on seeing the man trying to misbehave with the six-year-old girl, alerted the locals.

Panicked by the woman’s alarm, the man tried to flee the park. But those in the vicinity of the park and residents of nearby houses chased and caught the man. He was thrashed by locals and handed over to the Sembium police. The details of the man were not available. Further investigations are on. Locals complained that the park, which was inaugurated recently, was being used as an ‘open air’ bar both during the day and in the evening. So, the public, particularly women, are scared to enter the park. Children play there during the day. But such incidents may turn the park into an unsafe zone for the residents. So, officials should initiate steps immediately to ensure that the facility, built at a cost of several lakhs, is put to proper use of the residents, some locals said.
