The Directorate of Medical Education has proposed to construct additional buildings, including additional cooler room, cadaver tank room, embalming room and other arrangements for water supply at the medical college premises. The Health department has sanctioned of Rs 67.14 lakh for the new buildings.

Considering the number of bodies, all government medical colleges in the State have upgraded their mortuaries to ensure that they had all the required facilities, said the Director of Medical Education Dr R Narayana Babu.

The hydraulic cadaver tank room would allow more space to keep cadaver tanks. The mortuary at Madras Medical College has a capacity of about 110 cadaver tanks. The additional cadaver tank rooms would be able to store more than 150 bodies.

More cooler rooms would be added to store the bodies for a longer time. The embalming room for the funeral set up is required at the medical college, and considering the high burden of the number of bodies, additional embalming room and water supply arrangements are required, said the hospital authorities.
