Metro ridership doubles in 1 yr, 3.28 cr users in 2019

The patronage for Chennai Metro Rail doubled in the past one year, with the number of passengers using it in 2019 touching 3.28 crore – 128 per cent more than 2018.

The number of commuters has gone up from 1.43 crore in 2018 to 3.28 crore in 2019, said an official release. The patronage steadily rose after February 2019 when the full stretch of the phase 1 became operational.


From June 29, 2015 to December 31, 2019, 6.08 crore passengers have travelled by Chennai Metro Rail. The number of commuters were 2.8 crore till December 2018. But in 2019, 3.28 crore passengers travelled by Metro Rail, the statement from CMRL said.


Every day, over one lakh passengers travelled by Metro Rail during the months of August (in 19 days), September (22 days), October (24 days), November (24 days) and December (26 days), the release said.


To make the service more efficient, the CMRL has launched many last-mile connectivity measures like share autos, share taxis and cab feeder services. These are currently available at a few Metro stations. Going forward, these services will be made available at all the 32 Metro stations in Chennai, added the press release.
